The Daily Dig
My big project for 2010 involved the birch corner in the Southeast corner of the back garden. For years I'd wanted to bring in some 'sitable' boulders. This year I brought in three, built a redwood bench and worked over the borders on either side. Back in January the boulders arrived.
Waiting for the guys to come help me move the boulders I had time to finally plant out this 'ponytail palm'. Here is one of the last looks toward the pond before the boulders went in.
Here, back in early February, you can see the placement of the three boulders better before the plants have completely taken over.
Even earlier in February on a bleak day you can see all the way down the back path to the steps up to the corner deck in this photo. To the right you can see the 'path' leading between the birches to the redwood bench.
Same day, looking down at the ground around the birches. Mostly planted with bromeliads, ferns, hellibore and sonchus.
One of my favorites, Telanthophora grandifolia, in bloom along the far path shot from the top of one of the new boulders.
Here's a photo looking back the other way, South, on the back path from the Y.
This is another view of the area around the pond taken on a ladder looking down over the Telanthophora grandifolia. You can see how much ground isn't planted at all, a concession to our dry climate.
And, while I had the ladder out, a view back toward the new bench over the same cloud forrest plant.
Here back in February is the newly created and installed redwood bench.
Detail of the redwood bench. I couldn't bear to remove all the nice looking bark but I sanded it down a bit before coating it.
This was the view in March from near the redwood bench.
This is what I like most about the pond: seeing everything reflected on it. This photo mostly just shows the birch corner in reflection.
And here is an overall shot looking over the pond toward the birch corner taken on the first day of Spring break, at the end of March. Look how lush everything gets in March, well into our wet season.
This is nearly the sane shot taken in May.
