Polyculture is the practice of planting a community of interrelated, interdependent plants, mimicking in your garden bed, the complex relationships found between plants in nature. Today I planted my first polycultural vegetable bed and I am interested to know if anyone has grown or will be growing their vegetables in this manner? Here's the list of what I put in mine:
Lettuce
Radishes
Swiss Chard
Beets
Sugar Snap Peas

Very excited... I am now 6 days into this planting and the seedlings are starting to show, I can't tell for sure what is sprouting but my guess is it's the radishes. It has been raining all day today and I think this will really help get things moving along nicely.

I really like this idea, so I made 12 5x5 squares in my large garden. The paths are large enough for me to take the push mower down and have a very neat look. The word "polyculture" is new to me, but I have always tried to "companion plant". It sounds close to your idea. This week in square 1 is Rhubarb, swiss chard, marigolds and zinnias. Square 2 is all types of lettaces, spinach and 3 types of onions, with flowers at the corners. Square 3 is Beets, love them, golden and Detroit Reds mixed with marigolds. In every square I will try to intermix flowers and plants that like each other. I really like this idea.

Come on people - ever heard of the the Three Sisters?
We just planted corn, beans, and squash just like the Native Americans used to do forever.
....I'm looking forward to wrapping the beans around the corn.
Cheers.

I am somewhat new to growing vegetables but I did just read about the Three Sisters and really connected with the idea and how much since it makes. I'd like to see a photo or two of your plantings too.
