Growing Citrus in a Container

I started this project growing a Moro Blood Orange, in Jan of 09 and everything has been going fine up until recently. I noticed that they top leaves of the tree were starting to look like the plant was thirsty, so I have been giving it a little more water, but now the fruit that set after this springs bloom has begun to turn yellow and fall off, which makes me think that it is getting to much water, but the leaves still look as if the plant needs water... anyone grown citrus in a container and encountered this same issue? I would love to enjoy a nice crop of fruit next year, but at the rate I am going... :\ any thoughts would be appreciated.

I've tried to grow citrus in a pot and haven't had the best of luck. I think you should put it in a bigger container so that the roots are far away from the clay pot. The pot may be getting to warm and the roots that are next to it my be affected by the heat causing the plant to stress out and drop your precious fruit. I had my orange tree in a pot for eight years and it had nice green leaves and lots of blossoms. When it would start to fruit they would all fall off. I think I got two oranges in eight years. Mine was also in half sun and half shade. Try moving it to the front yard if there is more sun there. My dad has my tree now and planted it in the ground and it has seven juicy oranges on it. Good luck!

Hi Steven, thanks for the info on your experience, kind of makes me think I should just put it in the ground, it would be nice to get lots of fruit to enjoy. How many years has your tree been in the ground now?

My dad put it in about two years ago. I love that Italian citrus terracotta look too. Try looking for dwarf citrus varieties that do well in pots.

Hey Steven, seems that my blood orange is doing fine now. Lots of new flowers and a good number of fruit are still hanging on the tree :)

Hey Steven, did you get my earlier message about how my tree is doing? This is a reply to your comment about your Dad putting the tree in the ground about two years back.

Hi Steven, thanks for the info, I am going to give this a try for another year, as I don't have much room in my beds for another tree :(

My potted lemon tree does this "oh, I am dying" routine every other year and always comes back with a flourish. Same thing--looks dry, leave at top, dry up, wither/fall off. Now I just water as usual and it comes back in a couple of months better than ever. It's grown every year and now is the best it's ever looked. I know that's not an answer and not practical when you are looking for a crop, but perhaps these potted citrus are just persnickity and dramatic?
