Amount of water for young tree?

Tree is growing "sideways" more than "tallways" — a very peculiar shape considering the high quality of deep soil we provided. I'm thinking it's caused by the shallow watering of nearby shrubs. So I realize I must "deep water" the tree maybe twice a year. But how much water is "deep watering?" Anybody have a gallon amount to quote?
