The Daily Dig
I can't help noticing all the different species of aloe blooming in Southern California right now. You can't drive more than a block or two without seeing intense orange, red, and yellow spikes reaching towards the sky. I had always thought that they bloomed in the summer...but some bloom in the winter months. If you're lucky enough to have a winter bloomer, you will have amazing color in your garden during the gloomy months ahead.
I love this huge aloe flower. I like how the bloom is slightly tapered in at the top.
So LA!
The pictures below are of my friend Brad's tree aloe. He was kind enough to give me a cutting. The yellow flowers look like little tiny bananas. Hopefully I will have spikes next winter...until then I will have to enjoy everyone else's aloes in bloom.

Look how many spikes are coming out of one aloe plant

Nice! I've never gotten down to the Huntington in the winter but it must be ablaze with aloe flowers now.
